Toad Abodes

At its simplest, a toad abode is a shelter where toads may lounge, protected from the sun and potential predators. A toad abode has thick walls and is unglazed on the inside to retain moisture.

Toads are beneficial critters because they consume insects and slugs considered pests to gardens. The United States Department of Agriculture estimates that a single adult toad can eat 10,000 insect pests over the course of an average summer. The common toad (Bufo bufo) lives up to 40 years, but most toad species live about 5 to 10 years.
